POTD 2/6/12 Detroit Citizens Taking Charge

From The Daily comes the story of Detroit citizen’s struggle to protect themselves in a city with exorbitant crime and a severely underfunded and understaffed police department. In the face of impotent and even uncaring responses from police to burglaries, and violent crime, people have taken up arms in a modern day pseudo-post-apocalyptic wild west. “Justifiable Homicide” rates are way up, and the more well to do residents have hired private self-described para-military forces to try to keep them safe.

On the one hand it’s very disturbing, but on the other, not remotely unexpected.

POTD 2/5/12 Letters of Note: To My Old Master

I’m sure I’m months behind (decades in web-years) in seeing this for the first time, but it’s so fabulous I had to share it anyway. From Letters of Note comes this piece of correspondence from a freed slave writing in response to his former master who had written asking him return to the post he’d held as a slave.

I’d love to have something insightful to say about it, but honestly, the gentleman’s words speak for themselves.

POTD 2/2/12 Where My Brain Has Been

For tonight’s Post of the Day, I’ve decided to show you what’s been eating up my life the last few weeks.

Dark Odyssey Winter Fire is one of the larger, and dare I say, best, sexuality/kink/spirituality events in the United States. It takes a dedicated crew of people and a significant investment of time to make an event of this scale a success. For the past several weeks I’ve been working with one of the event producers to get all the programing together, from choosing specific classes, to building the schedule grid, to writing and editing the bios, descriptions, and advertisements for the program book.

Winter Fire is happening in just a few short weeks, and I’m justifiably proud of the programing line-up we’ve put together. You can check it out here(link possibly NSFW): Dark Odyssey Winter Fire 2012 Presenters & Workshops  although there have been a few changes since this was posted.

Once the event is over I’ll be able to be a bit more reliable with my blogging and hopefully I’ll see some of you there!

POTD 2/1/12 Some Straight Talk on STDs from (the ever awesome) Mollena

Over on her blog, Mollena has written an excellent post about her experience being diagnosed as HSV positive. Perhaps more important than the excellent information she provides about the incidence of HSV 1 & 2 in the U.S., she also talks very openly about the emotional impact of being diagnosed with an STI, even one as ubiquitous and generally harmless to people with reasonably strong immune systems as HSV.

note: Mollena is all-around pretty damn awesome and a kick-ass presenter, even if she does intimidate the hell out me
